The Caribbean is one of the most exotic regions in the world…yet one of the most unexplored of all. The wonderful picture perfect beaches, towns, and natural parks leave very little time for visitors to explore deep…into the unsolved.

This is quite evident from the story of Larimar, a semiprecious gemstone that is exclusive of the region. To be more precise, there is only one square kilometer area within a very inaccessible region in the Dominican Republic where some 15 mines of Larimar lies.

Larimar was known to natives for a long time; however, it was not before 1974 when this extraordinary stone came into the limelight after catching the attention of some Europeans. The experienced eyes of Miguel Mendez were quick to appreciate the magnificence of the stone, which started getting its long due admiration.

Larimar is found exclusively in the mountainous region of the Dominican Republic. The unusual beauty, the color which resembled the sea and the sky, combined with the aesthetics led to the belief that the stone has some unusual power. The full extent of Larimar’s metaphysical qualities is still unknown but natives believe that the stone exerts its own particular energy—blue calm the spirit, green assist in healing, red resembles strength. Moreover, Larimar associates itself with the Fifth Chakra of the human body.

The discovery of Larimar was a new episode in the gemstone industry of the Caribbean followed by the world. In fact, after the discovery of Larimar, Dominican Republic got a new recognition in the world. However, much of the mystery behind Larimar is unsolved—partially due to the inaccessible region where the mines are situated and rest due to the stock of stone in nature. In fact, no one is sure about the quantity of stone present in the mines. However, one thing is for sure that there is not much Larimar reserve left.
